People of Jammu and Kashmir want elected government: Dr Farooq Abdullah

Poonch // National Conference President Dr. Farooq Abdullah while raising questions on the delay in restoration of statehood status of Jammu and Kashmir and holding of assembly elections said that people should quickly want an elected government soon.

The former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir greeted the people on New Year and expressed hope of early elections in the former state and hoped for a good and full year for them.

Wished for another year to come.
“I hope that the government will understand the expectations and aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir and will hold elections as soon as possible,”Abdullah said on Saturday. And people are desperately waiting for another opportunity to get their fingers inked. The Supreme Court itself has directed the Election Commission and the Central Government to conduct elections by September next year.

I hope that Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha will personally consider this. The centrally administered area wants an elected government so that the genuine concerns of the people can be heard and addressed.

Earlier on December 11, the Supreme Court had directed the Election Commission to take necessary steps to conduct elections to the Legislative Assembly of Jammu and Kashmir by September 30 next year. The court said this during the hearing of a set of petitioners challenging the Center’s revocation of special constitutional privileges to the erstwhile state under Article 370.

In a landmark judgment, a five-judge bench of the Supreme Court has upheld the Centre’s revocation of Article 370, saying it is a temporary clause and the President has the power to abrogate it.

Several applications were filed in the Supreme Court, including those of private individuals, lawyers, activists, politicians and political parties, challenging the Jammu and Kashmir Administration Act 2019, which led to the creation of Jammu and Kashmir. Kashmir was divided into two centrally administered areas. On August 5, 2019, the Center had announced the repeal of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 and dividing the region into two union territories.
